Ag Systems Management at Texas A&M: Unlocking Regenerative Practices for Semi-Arid Regions

Semi-arid regions like Texas and Oklahoma face unique challenges when it comes to implementing regenerative agricultural practices. To address this knowledge gap, a team at Texas A&M AgriLife Research is embarking on a five-year project to study the implementation and performance of regenerative agriculture systems in these regions.

The 'Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Enhancement Through the Utilization of Regenerative Agricultural Management Practices' project aims to evaluate the environmental, economic, and agronomic sustainability of regenerative agricultural systems. Led by Katie Lewis, Ph.D., a soil scientist at Texas A&M AgriLife Research, the team will focus on implementing cover crops during fallow periods and measuring their impact on greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, and soil health.

One of the main goals of the project is to better understand how regenerative practices perform under varying precipitation levels in these regions. The Southern Great Plains receive an average of 40-50 inches of rain per year, which is significantly different from the amounts typically seen in other parts of the country. This limited research has led to a lack of understanding about how regenerative practices can be adapted and implemented in these areas.

'We want this to be as real as possible,' said Lewis. 'We're not just looking at cover crops or regenerative agriculture; we're looking at implementing it into a larger production system.'

The project's focus on region-specific research is crucial, as it will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing agricultural producers in these areas.
